Concealed Pistol License Requirements
Requirements Summary:
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Be a citizen of the United States or an alien lawfully admitted into the United States.
- Be a legal resident of Michigan and reside in Michigan for at least six months immediately prior to applying for a CPL. Note: The six-month residency requirement can be waived if the application is for either an emergency license, or for a new resident that has a valid concealed pistol license issued by another state.
- Have a valid state-issued driver's license or personal identification card.
- Successfully complete an appropriate pistol safety training course like the NRA's Personal Protection In the Home course.
- Is not subject to an order or disposition for certain mental health issues or legal incapacity; Has not been found guilty but mentally ill of any crime; Has not offered a plea of not guilty of, or been acquitted of, any crime by reason of insanity; Is not currently and has never been subject to an order of involuntary commitment in an inpatient or outpatient setting due to mental illness, and; Does not have a diagnosed mental illness at the time the application is made that includes an assessment that the individual presents a danger to himself or herself or to another, regardless of whether he or she is receiving treatment for that illness.
- Is not subject to a PPO or Bond prohibiting purchase or possession of a firearm.
- Has never been convicted of a felony in Michigan or elsewhere, and a felony charge against the applicant is not pending in Michigan or elsewhere at the time he or she applies for a CPL.
- Has not been dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces.
- Is not prohibited under federal law from possessing or transporting a firearm as determined through the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
- Has not been convicted of a misdemeanor violation (within the last 3 or 8 years depending on the charge), or have a pending charge for a misdemeanor violation at the time of application for any of the 67 prohibited crimes that can be grouped into 8 types: (See below for the complete list)
- Alcohol / Controlled Substance violations such as operating a car, plane, snowmobile, ORV, Boat, or train while under the influence.
- Firearm violations such as the Illegal use, sale, possession, or discharge of a firearm, self-defense spray, or switchblade.
- Vehicle (Non-Alcohol) violations such as failing to stop, reckless driving, and operating with a suspended or revoked Driver License.
- Theft violations such as breaking and entering, embezzlement, and larceny.
- Assault / Abuse violations such as assault, child abuse, and stalking.
- Sex Crimes such as displaying sexually explicit matter to a minor, indecent exposer, and 4th degree criminal sexual conduct.
- Property violations such as malicious destruction of property and malicious use of a service provided by a telecommunication service provider.
- Miscellaneous violations such as disorderly person.
